A welcoming primary school in the L5 area is seeking a calm, patient and engaging SEND Teaching Assistant to provide dedicated support for a Year 5 pupil with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

The pupil is warm and engaging and builds positive relationships with adults. They currently attend school until 10:30am, with a gradual plan to increase their timetable towards full-time attendance. The successful candidate will support this transition by creating a safe, structured and low-stimulus learning environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide consistent 1:1 and small-group support in a calm, low-stimulus setting.
• Build a positive and trusting relationship with the pupil.
• Use clear, simple language and allow sufficient processing time.
• Follow structured routines and prepare the pupil for transitions and changes.
• Recognise signs of overstimulation and use agreed strategies to support regulation.
• Respond calmly and safely if dysregulation leads to physical behaviour, such as hitting out.
• Adapt learning activities to meet the pupil's communication, sensory and emotional needs.
• Support the pupil's gradual increase in school attendance.
• Work closely with the class teacher, SENDCO and wider school team.
• Record relevant observations and communicate progress or concerns appropriately.
• Follow the school's safeguarding, behaviour and positive-handling procedures.
